I Went to an Elephant Show and All I Got Were These Lousy Photos

You cant win with photography. Whichever lens you have on your camera will inevitably be the wrong focal length.

After purchasing the Sigma 150-600, I soon became addicted to it. Being able to zoom from 150-600 mm is quite a bit better then 70-200 mm when you cant move from your seat.

While at an elephant show this summer, a trainer was waiting for his elephants turn to kick a ball, drag a log or paint a picture. He had a bit set up where him and his elephant would look bored sitting on the stones in the background. This was more interesting to me, and quite a bit more photogenic then a elephant dragging a log 30 feet from me. Especially as I had locked myself into 150mm as the widest I could go.

A Decisive Moment

So how could I make this look like the elephant was bored and waiting alone on this stage, when it was full of elephants, trainers, soccer nets and giant soccer balls?

I thought I could get the part of the photo I liked. Then take a bunch of photos of the stage after everything moved out of frame and make them into a panorama. Then I could add the elephant back in.

Photoshop can be hit or miss on this, but it worked well here

  • Masked out the transition between the elephant and the background getting rid of the trainer and the elephants penis in the process

After all that, Maybe it looks better to crop out all that negative space.

I don’t know. What do you think?
