I discovered a “Magnetic Mountainscape” when messing around with Ferrofluid and latex ink…

Today I tested out the “Raynox Dcr-250” which makes the 105 macro focus much closer. The problem with that of course is that the depth of field gets to be too shallow. This is a stack of 6 photos to get a better DOF.

I took 4 more photos focused farther in to field and stacked them in Photoshop…

2016-11-02-22-14-36-ps-1

First I stacked the first photo on the bottom,

2016-11-02-22-14-36-ps-2Then I masked in the in-focus areas on photo 2…

2016-11-02-22-14-36-ps-3

Then photo 3…

2016-11-02-22-14-36-ps-4

And then then photo 4,

2016-11-02-22-14-36-ps-5

Then the last photo for the last layer, which left me with this:

2016-11-02-22-14-19-36-ps-l5b

That left me with a missing puzzle piece there, and I could try to invent some stuff for the bottom, but luckily I took a different shot that could be used to fill the hole…

So I stacked this photo on top, then moved it to the same area as the rest of the layers…

2016-11-02-22-14-36-ps-6

Then masked in the missing parts that were in focus…

2016-11-02-22-14-19-36

Which left me with this…

Then I added a levels adjustment layer to bring the colors out a bit more…

Final Thoughts

The Raynox is a nice addition to my kit, it makes closest focus ridiculously close and takes my 1:1 macro closer to 2.5:1

Unfortunately as expected, the depth of field is greatly reduced.

It will be nice to try it on snowflakes this winter!
